The Light Layer Edit

The weeks before summer officially begins have their own dress code of sorts. To me, the sun feels stronger as the days stretch longer, and our wardrobe starts calling for lighter fabrics, breathable layers, and pieces that carry style without feeling overdone.

We’re in the heart of the season when a great layer can perfect a look. A tank may be perfect all afternoon, while a button-down worn open over it lends the outfit that relaxed, day-to-evening charm. On rainy mornings, cooler evenings, or days when comfort is the mood, leggings and a cropped hoodie still belong in the conversation.

For ShopTheBGuide curations, pre-summer dressing is really about knowing how to finish the look, not with heavy pieces or complicated styling, but with one well-placed layer that gives the outfit shape, dimension, and a strong point of view.

A Layer Can Change Everything

As we know, a great layer can shift the entire mood of an outfit. A dress becomes more city or beach-ready with the right finishing piece, while cargos with a fitted top can move from casual to cool with the right accessories and a light layer thrown over the shoulders.

This is why I love getting dressed this time of the year, and what makes the season feel so distinctive. Your outfit doesn’t have to be overly planned to feel intentional; it simply needs the right contrast. A relaxed silhouette paired with a more tailored line, an understated base brought to life through texture, or a familiar piece styled with a little more proportion and attitude.

The best light layers do not compete with the outfit. Instead, they create balance, add texture and proportion, and just enough attitude to make familiar pieces feel fresh again.

The Art of the In-Between Outfit

For me, the art of the perfect styled in-between outfit starts with a base that feels right for the weather and your personal style, then adding a piece that gives the outfit direction. Maybe it’s the finishing layer, a stronger shoe, a signature bag, or jewelry that changes the mood without making the look feel overdone.

As summer draws closer, I’m less interested in buying a lot of new pieces and more interested in editing well. The beauty of light layering before summer is how it lets you step into the next season with style, range, and a wardrobe that actually works for your life.

Have fun with layering, be intentional as you plan your outfit to carry you throughout the day, and most importantly, always go with what makes you feel and look your best!
